Where these numbers come from

US airlines above a certain size are required to report every domestic flight they operate to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics: when it was scheduled, when it actually arrived, whether it was cancelled, and how many minutes of any delay were the airline's own fault rather than weather or air traffic control.

That record is public and free. It is also close to unusable in its raw form — one file per month, several hundred thousand rows each. This site does the counting: it folds those flights into a record for every airline, every route and every airport, and grades each one on the same scale.
